Christmas Newsletter 2014

Octagon would like to welcome our second hygienist Amy-Beth Grantham who joined us recently to work every Wednesday alongside Ranj Hothi.  We would like to remind patients that you no longer need a referral to see a hygienist and a half hour appointment costs just £49.00.

We also have a new improved patient-friendly website to keep you up-to-date with our latest news and offers.  You can also follow us on facebook and Twitter @OctagonDental.

We would like to wish all our patients, laboratories and suppliers a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Spring Newsletter 2014

We are happy to say we passed our CQC inspection in February with flying colours and welcome all our patients old and new to read our excellent report here. (Link)
We have new Facebook and Twitter pages so people can follow us and keep up-to-date with dental news and events. *See links above*

We are pleased to welcome, qualified medical doctor Victoria Gauba, who has an extra qualification in dermatology.  Dr. Gauba offers free consultations to anyone who is interested in these treatments.  She will give price lists, a full explanation of what is involved in the treatment and show before and after photos of what can be achieved with these low-cost, simple procedures.

Another addition to our team is Urszula Zeller who is training with Harriett Ellis to become a dental nurse.  Urszula is a fluent Polish speaker and is more than happy to translate for any patients who would like to come in for a free consultation.

Christmas Newsletter 2013

2013 has been a busy year for the Octagon Dental Centre with 2 new additions to our team including trainee nurses Micheala and Urzsula and GDP John Webley.

Outside of work John has always been keen on quizzes and has appeared on TV quiz shows over the years including University Challenge, Mastermind, The Krypton Factor and most recently the Chase. Anyone who wishes to see a truly nail biting finish, and a chaser finally caught should catch up on ITV player

Our practice has continued to grow throughout the year and we now have an extension of our opening hours to include 2 evenings per week and increased visits to the Isle of Wight surgery due to patient demand. An expansion of our in house laboratory means we are able to offer a faster service for models and retainers.

I would like to thank my staff with a special mention to Lisa who coped admirably during my recent absence due to a trapped nerve in my neck and to colleagues and patients for their kind messages of support during my illness.

It only remains to wish you all a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

Christmas Newsletter 2012

This has been an extremely exciting year for Octagon Dental Centre and for me personally. Both my daughters chose 2012 to get married, the younger one in August and the older one in November. These were 2 wonderful days for me and my husband John and for all friends and family.

2012 has seen the continued growth of the practice. It was hard to imagine when I bought 531, Bitterne Road East in 2005 that this sadly neglected building would ever return to it's former glory. However 7 years on and after major building works, including a new roof, re-wiring, re-plumbing, new windows, state-of-the-art equipment and decorating we are well on the way. Together with my colleagues we are able to offer patients a full *in house* caring service, and with cross-referrals between ourselves, virtually all dental needs of our patients can be accommodated. With the growth of the practice comes progress, including the installation of a new surgery, which will be ready within the next 2 weeks.

I would like to wish all patients and their families a very happy and healthy Christmas and 2013 and say a big thank you to everyone who works with me at Octagon Dental Centre.

Merry Christmas
Patricia Webley

Spring Newsletter 2012

It’s a new year here at the Octagon Dental Centre and we are again welcoming new staff members. Dr Wilhelm Grotepass has joined the team, and will be offering dental implants for only £1000. A discount will be available for multiple implants. A dental implant is a small screw, which acts as a replacement tooth root. Fitted with a false tooth, an implant will act like a real tooth, creating more stability than a bridge or denture would give. A dental implant will also last longer and there would not be as much need for special cleaning. In addition to this, Dr Grotepass will be carrying out several other surgical procedures, including exposures and surgical extractions. If you would like to find out more, please give the practice a call and we will be delighted to help!

It has now been ten months since Dr Ranj Hothi took over from Dr Christopher Knight, who has retired from dentistry for the second time. We would like to wish him well and thank him for resuming general dentistry here in Bitterne Road East! We are very grateful for the warm reception Dr Hothi has received, and very pleased with the great testimonials that have been coming in. His popularity means that Dr Hothi has decided to increase his hours, and is hoping to start working on alternate Tuesdays as well as Wednesdays and Fridays in the very near future.

Our holistic health and beauty therapist Sandra Tickner has been very busy as she currently has a great offer running! Why not treat yourself to a wonderful top and toe experience. A back aromatherapy massage, followed by an aromatherapy facial, the treatment also includes a hand, foot and scalp massage, which leaves you feeling wonderfully relaxed. The treatment lasts for an hour and a half … of heaven!

This treatment would normally cost £71.00, but we are currently offering it for only £35.00. Please call reception on 02380 442100 to ask for more details or to book an appointment.   !

Winter Newsletter 2011

Merry Christmas from the Octagon Dental Centre!

Christmas and the New Year are fast approaching and it is astonishing to think back to the summer and how many exciting things have happened since then!

Sandra Tickner, our Holistic Beauty Therapist, has been offering free taster sessions on Wednesdays this past month, proving highly popular with both patients looking for a little relaxation after treatment and parents enjoying a special treat while their children have orthodontic treatment carried out in surgery. Sandras Essential Oil Facial, combining cleaning, toning and exfoliating with hand blended essential oils, has proved particularly popular. Its not too late to buy a Christmas Gift Voucher for a special friend in need of a treat, why not call reception today!

Our refurbishment of the building also continues and we have now started replacing the windows – hoping to keep our patients warmer over the colder months. However, with the building being over 100 years old and incorporating over 35 windows of many different shapes and sizes, this may take a few weeks to complete.

With our dentists increasing their hours and cosmetic dentistry, orthodontic and periodontal treatment proving ever more popular, it was clear that a new staff member was needed, and it was with delight that we welcomed Nicola Osborne to the team in September this year. A fast learner, Nicola has adapted fantastically to life on a busy reception desk and will be greeting you on your arrival and answering any queries you may have.

Having extra help has allowed our administrator Claire to concentrate on new marketing ideas – with very exciting consequences! The Octagon Dental Centre is delighted to announce that through Groupon we will be offering the fantastic Clearstep system at a highly reduced cost. The Clearstep system is revolutionary in the field of invisible orthodontics: Based around the clear positioner, the system works with you to utilize the most efficient form of mechanics available to treat your smile completely invisibly. This strictly limited offer will be available early next year. To find out more about the Clearstep System and Groupon, please call the Octagon Dental Centre on 02380442100 and one of our team will be happy to help!

We will be updating you in the New Year with more news and exciting offers, so dont forget to visit our website! Merry Christmas and a happy New Year!

Summer Newsletter 2011

There have been many exciting changes here at the Octagon Dental Centre over the last few months. Firstly, we would like to welcome our new dentist Dr Ranj Hothi, BDS, MSC (Perio), who will be able to tend to all your dental needs as well as providing treatment for periodontal disease, which affects the gums, bone and other supporting tissues of the teeth and, if left untreated, can be a major cause of tooth loss. Ranj qualified as a dentist in 1993 from the University of Sheffield. He was awarded Master of Science in Periodontology in 1998 from the Royal London Hospital, where he was trained in the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting the gums. He has been a member of the British Society of Periodontology since 1996.

Also joining the team is Aleksandra Tobiszewska, who will be providing general dentistry. Her main interests are Aesthetic Dentistry and Dental Implants. She has completed many courses, including: Minimal Intervention Dentistry; Cleaner, Whiter, Brighter; Progressive Tooth Whitening; Improve your Crown and Bridge Work. Alexandra is fluent in Polish as well as English and is looking forward to welcoming polish- speaking patients to the practice, making the experience as comfortable as possible by explaining treatment in an alternate mother-tongue.

We were extremely sad to say goodbye to Kianna Watts, who has been a member of the team for years. Kianna was given the opportunity to spend a year in sunny Spain and we wish her all the best and hope to receive many a colourful postcard! Taking over her duties is Millie Jackson, our fully qualified dental nurse from Hythe. Millie has recently returned from a year travelling in Australia and is looking forward to learning new skills here at the Octagon Dental Centre.

Also joining the team is Sandra Tickner. Sandra will be providing Holistic Health and Beauty Treatments in our newly refurbished Well-Being room. Sandra first trained in massage therapy in 1989. She then developed an interest in the use of essential plant oils in treatments; this led to her aromatherapy training in London with the pioneering aromatherapist Micheline Arcier. Since then, she qualified in beauty therapy and has undertaken further training in holistic therapies. She believes this is an area where you never stop learning and developing your skills. She has run her own successful private practice for many years. If you would like to see our new Well-Being brochure, please call reception on 02380442100 and we will be delighted to post you further details.

As our practice continues to go from strength to strength, the need for more staff has recently become apparent, and we are delighted to announce that we will soon be taking on a trainee dental nurse to join our busy and dedicated team.

Spring Newsletter 2011

Octagon Dental Centre has been providing specialist orthodontics in Ryde on the Isle of Wight for the last 5 years, and we are now excited to be able to announce our expansion in Cowes to both Mark Cromshaw’s practice, the Amery House Dental Surgery, and the practice of Judith Wickens, Consultant in Restorative Dentistry. Summer Newsletter 2010

Many congratulations to our senior nurse, Lisa Bruch, who has now completed her course at the prestigious University of Warwick and has become one of the first orthodontic therapists in Hampshire.

Another successful examinee is Rachel O’Farrell, who recently passed her exams to become a qualified dental nurse. Congratulations to both of them.

Kianna Watts, our third nurse, is not being left behind, and is currently planning to obtain a radiography qualification in the near future.

A t the Octagon Dental Centre we place great emphasis on training, and our efforts to ensure that all our staff are constantly up to date have been recognised by City Training Southampton, who have commended us on our training programmes. Training also makes up a large part of our membership of the British Dental Association’s Good Practice Scheme.

As many of you may have seen, we are continuing with our plan to refurbish 531 Bitterne Road East. The latest phase involved refurbishing and improving the parking area at the front of the building. We will next be improving all external and some internal lighting for the practice, and that is certainly not the end of our plans. Watch this space

Christmas Newsletter 2009

2009 has been an exciting and eventful year for us with the return of Family Dentistry to run alongside the Specialist Orthodontic side of the practice. 531, Bitterne Road East was auctioned by Smilemakers in July 2008 and happily I was successful in purchasing it, securing the future for my practice. I decided to make a clean break and to rename the practice as the Octagon Dental Centre. "531" has a long history as a centre for family dentistry, something that we were keen to retain, and so we were delighted to welcome Luaan Graham and Chris Knight in the Summer of 2009 to continue that legacy. Together they bring a wealth of experience and clinical excellence to the practice, and for Chris in particular, it is a sort of homecoming, as he started his dental career in Bitterne, before moving on to establish, and spend many happy years in, his very successful practice in Warsash. Like Laurie Beardshaw, who was of course, in practice in 531, Chris is also a very keen golfer.

We are also delighted to welcome Samantha McKinney, a dental hygienist, to the team. Sam joins Klaudia Bissett, our Dental Therapist, in providing auxillary services, supporting both sides of the practice. And we are looking forward to Lisa Bruch, currently our senior orthodontic nurse, finishing her course at the University of Warwick, and qualifying as one of the first Orthodontic Therapists in Hampshire.

And so, looking forward to 2010, the Octagon Dental Centre will be looking to continue to provide the same high level of non-extraction orthodontics that you have known for the last 4 years. We will be introducing a range of payment plans that will enable our dental patients to budget for their care in a controlled and planned manner. We intend to expand our team to include other colleagues who can add to the range of services that we provide.

It just remains to wish all our patients, past, present, and future, a Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year!

Doctor Patricia Webley

Staff News

On Wednesday 12 March, Lisa our senior orthodontic nurse attended an interview at Warwick Medical School. Lisa will be studying for the Royal College of Surgeon’s Diploma in Orthodontic Therapy. This is a very new course which allows registered orthodontic nurses to become orthodontic therapists. There are only 10 places available on the course so Lisa realised that there would be great competition for places.

An orthodontic therapist is permitted to treat patients under the orthodontist’s instruction and is a very valuable member of the orthodontic team.

We are extremely happy and excited to report that Lisa has been offered a place on the course which will commence in August. Lisa will be one of the first orthodontic therapists to qualify in Hampshire.

Dr Webley and her team all wish Lisa the best of luck.

Great News and  New Name

You may have heard that the practice's home at 531 Bitterne Road East was due to be auctioned on July 15th.

We will therefore be able to provide continuing specialist orthodontic services from 531 Bitterne Road long into the future.
