Periodontal disease is a condition which affects the gum, bone and other supporting tissues of the teeth. Advanced inflammation can cause spaces between the tooth and gum which are prone to infection. If left untreated periodontal disease can be a major cause of tooth loss.
Ranj qualified as a dentist in 1993 from the University of Sheffield. He was awarded the Master of Science in Periodontology (gum disease) in 1998 from the Royal London Hospital, where he was trained in the diagnostics and treatment of conditions affecting the gums. He has been a member of the British Society of Periodontology since 1996.
