Orthodontics - Your Questions Answered

What will happen at my first appointment?

For your first appointment we will assess your problems, discuss the treatment options available to you and the best time for you to start treatment. We will also take into account your own concerns, your dental and facial development and your oral hygiene. If you are not ready to start treatment, you will be reviewed at a later date. If you are ready to start immediately, we will make an appointment to take dental records which include dental study models, photographs and x-rays.

Will there be a charge for my consultation?

No – Our initial consultation is free of charge for both adults and children.

What type of brace will I need?

This will depend on the problems you have with your teeth and jaws.  Your orthodontist will advise you which options are available.

How long will treatment take?

Treatment times are different for all patients depending on the type of treatment you need.  Our orthodontist will discuss this with you during your consultation

Will I need to have teeth taken out?

At Octagon, we like to see our patients at as young an age as possible as this can dramatically reduce the need to extract permanent teeth.  Take a look at Orthopaedics on our Treatments page for more information

Does having orthodontic treatment hurt?

No, but you can normally expect your teeth to feel tender for the first few days after having your brace fitted and also following your routine adjustments.  We normally recommend that you take your usual headache tablet to ease the tenderness.

Can I have invisible or tooth coloured braces?

Invisible or tooth coloured braces look great as you can see from our Orthodontics insert . Both SmileTRU and ‘aesthetic braces' are available at Octagon.

I am over 18 – am I too old to get my teeth straightened?

You are never too old to have your teeth straightened. We have many patients in their 20's and 30's and many a good deal older!  Our orthodontist has a long history of treating adults, with great success.

What are the possible benefits of treatment?
